#5: Brown Rice
Versatile, inexpensive, easy on the digestive system, and agreeable with just about everyone, brown rice is one of those must-have staples that I believe no one should live without.  For quite a long time, I avoided brown rice, opting for the quick-cooking ‘instant’ rice I grew up on because, well, it’s fast and it’s what I was used to.  After hearing, repeatedly, the benefits of brown and realizing what minimal nutrition is supplied by the instant, I switched.  And I’ll never go back.

One thing that’s made it more manageable for me is to make large batches of rice, then use some as a side the same day and refrigerate the rest in a sealed container for use in recipes throughout the week.  It makes home-cooked weeknight dinners faster and easier without compromising my family’s nutrition.  Learn more about batch cooking here.
